Remember Trick-or-Treating on Halloween?

For today’s post I’m going to cheat a little and direct you to a piece of mine, “When Halloween Was the Ultimate Treat,” that was run in my local newspaper, The Times Union.  It ran a couple of weeks ago, but I thought it would be better to post about it closer to All Hallows Eve.  Plus it gets me a free post without having to come up with any original material, which is always a good thing.  Especially on mornings in October when I wake up to snow on the ground and below-freezing temperatures and I haven’t planted my hydrangea bulbs yet.  But as the clerk at Zack’s Guns & Ammo told me yesterday, “We don’t have to like it.  We just have to live with it.”

Happy Halloween!    Remember to stock up on Butterfingers this weekend.

P.S.  I had a spike in page views on Wednesday.  Anyone have any idea that might have happened?

  1. It’s not cheating since you wrote it. That’s what I tell myself anyway, when I dig out an old post. Also when I serve leftovers three nights in a row.

Our neighborhood gets DROVES of children. They come out of the woodwork. Or, rather, the country. I tried to separate my kid’s candy with him last year and he looked at me like I was crazy. What was the point of a candy hierarchy?

Kids these days. They’ve gone soft.

    1. No sorting of candy into tiers? The world has gone mad. And there is, for the record, nothing wrong with serving leftovers three nights in a row. I love leftovers. It’s like how a great movie reveals new things on each successive viewing.

If your neighborhood attracts from all over, you must be giving out something good.

  2. Wish I’d get an unexpected spike in page views. 😉 Wednesday must have been “check on Mark day”.

Heading over to read your article…

    Happy Halloween!

  3. Nice article! I have fond memories of trick-or-treating and am very excited that my oldest is old enough to enjoy it as well (especially because I get to sneak some out of his bag when I graciously offer to carry it for him). 🙂 I, too, had an unexpected spike on Wednesday, but my guess is that it was logarithmically smaller than yours. In my case, it was probably people looking for you. 🙂

    1. Thank you Wendy. Glad you liked it. And I wouldn’t be so sure your spike was logarithmically smaller than mine. Especially since I haven’t heard the word logarithm since that commercial for Texas Instruments.

      1. Ah, Texas Instruments. Remember when that calculator was SO cool? Maybe that’s a future post title for you? 🙂 Or it’s possible it was never cool and I was hanging out with the wrong people…

  4. I hope it’s not cheating, because I did the same thing today. And we – here in Calgary – have not had snow on the ground yet. I will surely eat these words, soon, likely Monday if the forecast is to be believed.

I miss pillowcases for trick-or-treating. Just saying.

And yes, I had a spike one day in stats. And Stuff Kids Write did too. Not sure what that’s about. A Halloween mystery?

    1. Yeah, the pillowcase is kind of a classic. You think it’s not even that filled up, but when you dump it out there’s enough candy to last until the end of time. And yes, there must be a spirit out there racking up page views. A friendly ghost, like Casper.

  5. I think I’m responsible for Wednesday’s page view spike. I can see Occupy Albany from my office window, but this website seems to be the only way to get current Occupy Schlabadoo information. Please don’t toilet paper the bushes in front of our house again this year, Mark. More snow’s in the forecast.

    1. So it was you! Well, I’ll take it. A hit’s a hit.

And hey, the weather’s not my problem. Halloween comes but once a year, and those bushes don’t toilet paper themselves. Not I’m admitting anything.
